LG Snowboard FIS World Cup continues in London and Saas-Fee

by Raúl Revuelta

After the outdoor start of the FIS World Cup in Sölden last weekend, the action moves on to London this weekend as the LG Snowboard FIS World Cup Big Air competition will be carried out at Battersea Power Station, followed by the half-pipe opening in Saas Fee in Switzerland.

On 30th October 2010, it will be the third time that London hosts a FIS World Cup Big Air competition which marks the highlight of a three day music and winter sport festival called "London Freeze". The two Snowboard freestyle competitions next week represent the first chances to collect points for the newly invented overall World Cup for Snowboard Freestyle: from this season on, the most complete freestyle rider will be crowned over the half-pipe, big air and slopestyle event series. Reason enough for many top athletes to strap on the boards at Halloween as well as in the Swiss glacier paradise just a few days later.

Like in previous years, the Battersea Power Station with its iconic towers will be transformed into a huge ski resort with a 32 m high and 100 m long real snow jump at the heart of the event venue. Top riders including Switzerland's Iouri Podladtchikov and Gian-Luca Cavigelli as well as Finnish Olympic Halfpipe runner-up Peetu Piiroinen, among others, are all hoping for the largest share of the event prize purse.

On 3 and 4 November the cream of the snowboarding world will gather for the 7th FIS Snowboard World Cup in Saas-Fee to show off their skill in the Freestyle Park Allalin’s half-pipe at 3,300 metres. Saas Fee's half-pipe season opening is expected to attract some 100 of the world's best boarders to the glacier village. The early-season competitions in Saas-Fee are among those that attract the highest number of participants. New for 2010 the competition pipe in the Freestyle Park Allalin has been extended to meet Olympic standards. The side walls have grown a good meter in comparison with last year and now stand at 6.5m. The length of the pipe has also been increased by 30 to 40m. The result is a 22 foot pipe that stretches 150 m down the slope, that has been widely used for great training giving boarders optimal conditions to prepare for the LG FIS Snowboard World Cup and FIS World Championships 2011 in La Molina in Spain.

The FIS Snowboard World Cup in Saas-Fee now has its own name. From this year on, the now well-established freestyle event in Saas-Fee will be known as Allalin 360. The organizers chose the name to help establish a recognizable profile for the World Cup event in the glacier village. "A short, punchy name sticks in people's minds", explains Daniel Andenmatten, President of the Saas Fee Organizing Oommittee.

The organisers look very much forward to their cooperation with Roxy/Quicksilver. During the FIS European Cup as well as during the FIS World Cup, Roxy/Quiksilver will provide a varied programme with movie nights, DJ rotations (with Fredy K), fashion shows and much more. Six to seven action-packed party nights will be held in the Livingroom or in the Popcorn bar altogether. You're sure to bump into at least one of the top riders competing at these events.

Xtreme Verbier 15th Anniversary

 by Raúl Revuelta

2010 marked the 15th year for the Xtreme competition in Verbier...

Since its inception in 1996 the "Xtreme" has been considered the most prestigious Freeride competition in the world. The "Xtreme" is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year -15 years of passionate freeriding and great sports performances on the mythical North Face of the Bec des Rosses, a dauntingly steep and frighteningly jagged 500m rock-face. In places, the Bec des Rosses presents 55 degrees of slope. In an upright position one can almost lean on the face with one’s elbow. With steep and narrow couloirs, high rock cliffs, changing snow and terrain, it demands technical skill, great physical conditioning and a connection with the mountain that only experience can bring.
The Nissan Xtreme by Swatch -Verbier is the final stage of the Freeride World Tour (FWT).

Saas-Fee Nostalgic Gourmet Mile

The glacier village Saas-Fee is staging the Nostalgic Culinary Mile for the fourth time on 13 September 2009. From noon until 6 p.m. the main street in Saas-Fee will be transformed with the appearance of one long, inviting dining table where guests can celebrate and feast in style. You will have the pleasure of tasting numerous traditional culinary specialities from the Valais region, many of which have been virtually forgotten over the years. These delights will be on offer together with some good Valais wine at the many stands along the main street.

The restaurateurs and hoteliers will be serving in the costumes and in the spirit of the good old days. You are surrounded by "smugglers", "mountaineers of the old school", "English noblemen from the 19th century", "genteel ladies" or "farmers' wives in the typical dress of the Valais region". And even the pioneer of tourism, the priest Johann Josef Imseng, will be commemorated as some people dress up in the clothes of 19th century priests. One of the many highlights of the day is definitely the prize-giving ceremony for the most original nostalgic costume. Throughout the day, a jury specially selected for this task will be looking for the most beautiful and unusual outfit.

The event which was planned to be a one-off affair to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Saas-Fee hotel business in 2006 has now become a permanent fixture on the village's calendar of events. The very first of these events three years ago was so successful for the organisers from the Saas-Fee Hoteliers' Association and enjoyed such positive feedback that it was decided without further ado to hold it on an annual basis. The Gourmet Mile has developed into a real crowd puller appealing to people of all ages, and the decision to stage this special event every year has definitely proved to be the right one.

This year the Nostalgic Gourmet Mile will be raising money for the "Tanja" Foundation in the village of Bitsch, which supports severely mentally and physically handicapped adults.

SuperStern – The new BLISS show

by Raúl Revuelta

The Swiss a cappella band BLISS will return to Saas-Fee next February 6, 2009 to present their new "SuperStern" show in the glacier village.

This appealing group got to know Saas-Fee last November when they wanted to implement an apparently completely crazy idea. They had an unbelievable goal: they decided to do a 1:1 remake of the world-famous classic "Last Christmas" video by Wham (1984) in the original venues in and around Saas-Fee. No sooner said than done: the group travelled to the glacier village with 80s-style wigs and blouses with padded shoulders in their bags. And the impossible happened: a sensationally entertaining remake of the classic video was produced, perfectly staged and implemented. Even the weather was perfect for the band, providing precisely the right atmosphere for the shooting with snow, fog and a wintry white landscape. The video was broadcast during the Christmas season on the well-known music channels and the a cappella version of "Last Christmas" was admired on various radio programmes.

Christmas is over and BLISS is now turning up the heat with their new show entitled "SuperStern". Because the band liked Saas-Fee so much, they decided to return in spring and perform their new "SuperStern" show in the glacier village. Thus, guests can look forward to an entertaining musical evening and exciting show on February 6, 2009 at 9:00 p.m. at the gym in Saas-Fee, located directly on the village square. Admission is free!

The first Snowmaker successfully operated at Zermatt last week

By Raúl Revuelta

Zermatt Bergbahnen was the first ski resort to order a new kind of artificial snow system: the IDE’s All Weather Snowmaker. Later Pitztal Gletscherbahnen was the second Company to order, following Zermatt’s footsteps, the snowmaker. IDE Technologies is a world leader and pioneer in water desalination, wastewater concentrators and purifiers. The snowmaking technology comes from the mining industry where it is used to cool the goldmines. Both ski resorts have launched a new era in snowmaking by choosing the IDE All Weather Snowmaker from Israel to deliver large amounts of snow at all ambient temperatures.

The first Snowmaker was assembled and testing in Israel during July 2008. The Snowmakers were shipped from Israel to Slovenia, loaded on a truck convoy and transported to the base stations of the ski resorts. The crews worked hard to transport the heavy equipment up to the mountains. The first unit was lifted to the installation site in Zermatt by cables. The installation was completed in mid November and the Snowmaker was successfully operated last week.

Since the installation site has already been covered by heavy snow for the last few weeks, Zermatt ski resort will commence snowmaking with the new Snowmaker during spring 2009.
The installation of the snowmaker in Pitztal will be completed next month.
